Dirty Projectors Halloween Show Echo Park

: Dirty Projectors Halloween Show

Venue: Echo Park Rec Center

Drinks: None!

Song I Most Wanted to Hear: I had "Knotty Pine" stuck in my head while I was standing in line and I really wanted to hear them play it, but since they didn't play it when I saw them a few months ago I wasn't expected it to show up here. Imagine my surprise when Longstreth broke out his Byrne impersonation and rocked the house with "Knotty Pine" during the encore.

Musical Disappointments: I think the venue was a little ill-equipped to the Dirty Projectors sound and tended to flatten things out.

Superficial/General Impression on Singer's Appearance: This is a very good looking band. Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian and Haley Dekle hit a wide spectrum of hipster hotties: Amber is soft and dreamy, Angel is dark-eyed and confident and Haley Dekie is conventionally beautiful and poised. The show was on Halloween so it suggested that it would provide a nice opportunity to enjoy these sexy singers in provocative (slutty) costumes but instead they opted for Stevie Nicks, one of Arthur's knights and Dionysus.

Merch Table: A few shirts, some LPs, CDs and even a cassette tape! I bought a Green T-shirt with some pyramid designs.

Run-in's With the Bands: Angel bumped into me and gave me a stare that was a mix of "Why didn't you dress up?" and "I hate you." Maybe she was just in character as a knight and was looking to challenge me to a jousting duel in the back of the venue.

Best Onstage Moment, Non-Musical: Both Angel and Amber get their song showcase and they are both showstoppers because they allow the girl to take center stage and show their personality. Angel walked out for "Two Doves" and stared at the audience "Thanks for dressing up. You guys look great." Then she looked a little stunned that she had just said that and looked past the audience as she sang. Amber who seems quiet and conservative turns into James Brown when it's time for her to take control with "Stillness is the Move." She sashays across the stage and waves her jazz hands around with fierce confidence that you would have thought previously impossible given her prior stage presence. It's like watching an understudy break out of her shell and become a star.

Best Onstage Chatter: This is not really a chatty group.

Did the Bass Player Look Bored?: Not bored. He had a rainbow afro wig and glasses and was genuinely into the music.

Overall Scientific Rating of Show (out of ten): 7.4
