Best Coast at The Smell

Best Coast / Vivian Girls

Venue: The Smell

Drinks: One Newcastle at a bar nearby. The Smell is an all ages venue with no alcohol permitted.

Song I Most Wanted to Hear: "When I'm With You" by Best Coast. They led off with this track and it was a wonderful recreation of the lo-fi but not too damn noisy sound she got on her Black Iris 7". I didn't really have a Vivian Girls song that I most wanted to hear them play, I just mostly wanted to "dance" along with their adorable brand of grrrl punk.

Musical Disappointments: I was a little irritated that one of Best Coast's new songs "Crazy in Love" prominently rhymed "crazy" with "lazy" when she had already rhymed those words in her song "When I'm With You." It seemed, well, lazy.

Superficial/General Impression on Singer's Appearance:
Best Coast: Harsh dark eyes that clash with her blonde locks. Flabby arms adorned with tattoos that look like drunken mistakes made on past summer nights.
Vivian Girls: Emaciated with oversized clothes and bad ink covering her thin arms. However, the bass player Kickball Katy is quite lovely looking and she was even able to pull off the tattooed bicep look.

Merch Table: Best Coast had four 7" vinyl and a fairly simple t-shirt, I pretty much grabbed everything she had out. I figured that in event of a personal financial crisis I could cash in these vinyl on ebay. I also picked up both 7" from the Vivian Girls side of the table including one which was a limited to 100 test pressing, I am so geeky about that shit.

Run-in's With the Bands: I talked to Ms. Best Coast briefly but only in the service of commerce. I meant to try to talk to her later when she was less crowded by hipsters but I never got the chance. I also noticed Mr. Wavves hanging out and decided to ask him how his new LP was coming. He told me he'd just gotten back from Mississippi and had finished recording the album. It should arrive for the inevitable blogger backlash in late March or early April. I anticipate it, fuck the haters.

Best Onstage Moment, Non-Musical: I'm not sure best applies but the most notable non-musical onstage moment during Best Coast was when some young dude hopped on stage and ran to give her a kiss on the cheek before jumping back in to surf across the crowd. After played the song, she said "I got a kiss. Nice." but I couldn't tell if she was pissed or stoked. I think she should have considered kicking the dude in the head.

Best Onstage Chatter: Dunes told and totally botched a joke but then later revealed that they were playing for their first time onstage and I must commend them because they handled the show very well. They are certainly a band to keep an eye on. They have an EP coming out in March. They also mentioned that they all live together with one of the members of buzz Los Angeles band The Soft Pack.

Did the Bass Player Look Bored?: Best Coast sadly lacks a bass player to look bored. Vivian Girls had Kickball Katy on bass and I'm pretty sure Kickball Katy has never been bored and is possibly incapable of unhappiness.

Overall Scientific Rating of Show (out of ten): 7.5
